Nordiques "Best of" List

Updated 17 May 2012

"Pour le plaisir"

Over the years there have been so many funny Nordiques moments on and off the ice. In fact, there are way too many for one person to recall. So this compilation is just a start, and an invitation to all Nordiques players, past and present, to contribute as many as possible. Recent years and earliest years, all "best of" moments are welcome and will be posted. (These are NOT rank ordered.)

Here we go...

Funniest Breakaway (Tie)
Bruno's breakaway drop pass to no one (tied with Nomads breakaway on own goalie)

Best Hit
Gioia on Sting #32 (A perfect pile driver! After years of trying we finally got'em!!)

Best Near Decapitation of Team Mate
DiMartino on Bruno (A momentary lapse of reason, and sanity)

Best Slap Shot
Fratturo on Sting winger (Sawed that stick right in half)

Best One-Timer
Cookie -- first game, first goal, feed from Paulie...nothing but net

Best Rush
Tim Matijcio -- 5 Ice Paddy's sprawled on the ice in his wake; Playoff tie breaker. Highlight reel material

Best Ejection
DiMartino -- for calling the ref a "Nice Guy" (nope, not kidding)

Best Ejection of a Non-Player
Lou Gioia -- for verbally taking on our opponents (Sting, who else?) during summer 2010 game
(...like son, like father I guess)

Best Departure by Goalie from game without ejection
Gencarelli -- Diarrhea (you had to be there to appreciate it, but glad you weren't)

Funniest Loss of Personal Belongings During a Game
Brion and the money belt (in the running for funniest Nordiques moment ever)

Best Game
Winter 2009 Championship Game #2 vs Sting

Best Championship Winning Goal
Pevsner -- Winter 2009 Game #3 vs Sting

Best Hat Trick to Win a Championship (Tie)
Eric Farrell -- Summer 2010 vs Ice Paddys
Mike Robinson* -- Winter 2011 vs Ice Paddys
*Footnote: Mike was subsequently banished by MM-III from playing T6 hockey again,
owing to his super-human exploits in that championship series

Best Championship
Winter 2009 vs Sting

Best Back-to-Back Championships
Spring 2010 vs Anderson and Summer 2010 vs Ice Paddys

Best Post-Championship Party (Tie)
DiMartino July 2010 (Because of the tropical storm and the naked-in-the-spa thing)
Gioia October 2010 (Nothing like getting busted by the fire dept...priceless)

***BEST PLACE TO SEE YOUR NAME***
On the Torche Trophy

Best pass taken off his own neck leading to a goal
Anit Arora (a move he regularly practices in pre-game warm-ups)

Best nickname bestowed on a player at post-game beers
THUN-DER-BUNS!

Best Forward Line Names
"The Bread Line" Matijcio, Hepensteil, Arora (all Pepperidge Farm boys)
"The Buffet Line" Eng, Ichiro, Kim (do we really need to explain?)
"Vienna Fingers Line" Roth, Jackimski, Roth (yes, another racial thing)

Best Alternate Summer Team Name Suggestion
The "SANDY VAGs"

Funniest FB Posts (Tie)
Farrell Brothers, Doug Eng

Best of the Worst, Most Offensive Uniform/Equipment Stench in the History of the Nordiques
Rick Gioia (please tell me you saw this one coming)

George "Paco" Comesana

Best Combination Mascot and Sex Toy
The Rubber Chicken -- Hey Rookies! Surprise...

Oldest Line Playing Entire Game Together
Comesana-McCully-Schwartz Combined age of 157yrs (December 13, 2010)

Youngest Line Playing Entire Game Together
Arora-JMatijcio-TMatijcio Combined age of 74yrs (Spring 2010)

Most Nordiques Fans at Game
December 28, 2010 -- Too many to count -- all waving Nordiques signs

Best Nordiques Poem
'Twas the Night of a Hockey Game -- penned by Brian Fratturo et al (December 21, 2010)

Longest Goal Allowed by Nordiques Goalie
(Unofficial until a review can be completed)
Tie - Brian Fratturo and Anthony A-train Gencarelli (both from outside the far blue line)

Longest time span between goals for an active player - Doug Eng (3#yrs 4mos 2 weeks, 5 days)

Most ferocious forecheck to win a championship game - Breck Masterson (Winter 2012 Championship Game 1 in 1-0 win versus Anderson)

First-ever inter-generational Nordiques goal: On May 15, 2012 Quinn Blumenfeld scored his first goal in a 4-3 overtime win for the T6Nordiques.  Quinn is the son of long-time Nordique and defensive stalwart Jon Blumenfeld, who currently stands watch over the T6Nordiques blue line. Quinn, 20, who bears a striking resemblance to Philadelphia Flyers winger Scott Hartnell, is pleased to enter Nordiques lore, and is even more pleased his tally helped the Nordiques win. Alongside his dad, Quinn said he is looking forward to being a Nordique for many years to come. Jon realizes he's lucky to have this moment and has been looking forward to it for a long time. Then Jon admitted, "just three more goals and Quinn will surpass my own career goal total".

Best OT goal to win Championship:  Winter 2012 championship game #2 vs Anderson. In 4th OT period (2-on-2) and under pressure in defensive zone, Anderson shot bangs off Justin Matijcio's shin pad and rockets out to neutral zone with only Justin in pursuit. Justin converts the breakaway goal over the goalies' shoulder for the championship win.
